Coconut milk and passion fruit hot chocolate shots

passion fruit hot chocolate shots

This is a vibrant, sweet, rich hot chocolate to share with friends … or not. Although I start with home made coconut milk, this can work with store bought coconut milk, I suggest using a coconut milk that has no added preservatives or other nonsense.

This hot chocolate might be overwhelming to the senses, passion fruit is very bright and I have no way of knowing what type of passion fruit you might use. There are 32 varieties of passion fruits ranging from sweet to very acidic.

This is why I make it in shot form (espresso cup size). Although, today I did drink all of the shots myself. So it is up to you if you want to make half the recipe to try it by yourself or just go for it and make the entire serving.

You start with 1 cup of coconut milk but end up with 3/4 of a cup of the recipe at the end. Making each shot about 1/4 cup.

  • Yield: 3 chocolate shots 1x

Description

Passion fruit and coconut milk hot chocolate shots. Thick, creamy, vibrant, energetic!

Tools: small pot, whisk, small sieve, ceramic espresso cups

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup of coconut milk (250ml)
  • 10 to 25 grams of sour passion fruit pulp (about 1/2 of a medium passion fruit)
  • 20 grams of demerera sugar (2 Tablespoons)
  • 15 grams of ground cocoa nibs or 100% chocolate

Instructions

  1. Boil coconut milk and passion fruit pulp for 2 minutes
  2. Remove from heat, add sugar and chocolate. Whisk until it looks like hot chocolate.
  3. Sieve into a container then divide into 3 shots.

Notes

  • Passion fruits come in sour and sweet. Make sure you use the sour passion fruit.
  • You can substitute home made coconut milk for store bought milk, make sure it does not have any thickeners. You can use canned coconut milk but you may need to dilute with water. Starting consistency of the coconut milk should be like whole milk. Not like heavy cream.
  • Chocolate is complicated to explain. You can use any chocolate as long as it is 100% ground cocoa, cocoa nibs, or cacao. It is one ingredient. No added cocoa butter or lecithin, etc.
