My mom has been growing roses my entire life but we are never allowed near them. People ask me if there is any danger in consuming rose petals and I say of course not … unless you are cutting them from my mothers garden. You will lose your arm if she sees you damaging her roses. Luckily, I have three cute children that distracted her while I came up with this recipe.
I tried this with only water, goat milk, macadamia milk, and cow’s milk. The goat’s milk was my least favorite, the gamey aroma did not pair well with the roses, but the other options all worked very well. My favorite was a combination of water and cow’s milk. But you can certainly make this with just one or the other.

- Prep Time: 5 minutes

- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Yield: 1 cup 1x
Description
Delicate, aromatic, afternoon hot chocolate.
Ingredients
1/2 cup (120ml) of water
20 rose petals
1/2 cup (120ml) of milk
15 grams to 25 grams of 100% chocolate
15 grams (1 Tablespoon) sugar
Instructions
- Place the water and rose petal in a small pot and turn heat to medium. As soon as you see it boil, turn off heat and let the petals sit in the water for about 20 minutes.
- Remove rose petals from water and add milk, chocolate, and sugar if using.
- Turn heat on again, when it reaches a boil, turn off the heat, whisk the chocolate and serve. Top with rose petals.
Notes
All roses are different. Some are more fragrant than others. 20 petals where enough to give my hot chocolate a rose aroma, but your roses may be stronger or weaker. Adjust the quantity of rose petal accordingly. The longer you let them steep in the water, the more rose aroma will be released.
