Oats, water, cinnamon and chocolate, hello healthy mornings! Oat milk is a basic recipe in our house, my grandmother always made me drink it when I was sick … and I always asked her to fill it with chocolate, which she denied. But now I am my own boss. Oats are a great thickener for water based drinks and super nutritious and filling. And since I am an oatmeal cookie monster, I decided to create a hot chocolate that took little work but delivered on flavor, texture, and reminded me of an oatmeal cookie.

This recipe is based on ground cocoa nibs which can be called cacao paste, cacao/cocoa liquor, unrefined chocolate, bakers chocolate or chocolate de mesa without sugar. The importance here is that the ingredients be 100% ground cacao. It is the step before it gets processed into chocolate. The texture might not be smooth and that is ok. It is not 100% chocolate which is refined chocolate and tastes delicious as an eating chocolate … and will be a bit more expensive than the others I suggest. But the others I suggest, I would not eat, they are strictly used for making drinking chocolates.

Quick Oats Cinnamon Hot Chocolate – Vegan

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 2 minutes
  • Total Time: 12 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x
  • Diet: Vegan

Description

Vegan, kinda healthy, quick oats and cinnamon hot chocolate.

Tools: small pot and blender

Ingredients

Scale

1 1/4 cup of water (300ml)

1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon of quick oats (10 grams)

1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (7 grams)

1 tablespoon of finely chopped chocolate liquor or 100% ground cacao (8 grams)

1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon of brown sugar (14 grams

Instructions

  1. Place the water, quick oats, and cinnamon in a pot and boil for 1 minute.
  2. While the water boils place the brown sugar and 100% chocolate in a blender.
  3. When water boils, pour water into the blender and blend until the oats and chocolate are not visible.
  4. Pour through a sieve into a cup.

Notes

I blend in either a magic bullet or Vitamix. Sometimes I prefer the ease of the Magic bullet but I have to be very careful because the water is hot. If you are going to use a small blender, only pour half of the boiled water and the oats into the blender. This is  enough to melt the chocolate and puree the oats. Then you can add the remaining water int your cup with the blended water.

I prefer Vitamix because it does not matter if the water is super hot, there is enough room in my Vitamix for the steam but it is more work to clean up.
